6 Common Tourist Mistakes, and How to Avoid Them

When you’re a tourist in another state or country, there are always some mistakes you can make. These mistakes can lead to stress and disappointment. They might even interfere with you seeing all the local attractions you wanted to visit.

If you know what the most common tourist mistakes are, then you’ll also know how to avoid them. Let’s explore a few of the bigger ones now.

  1. Over Packing

Last minute packing almost always results in over packing. Check the weather forecast before you leave and pack to the weather with only a couple of ‘just in case the weather changes’ outfits. Write a list of all the items you want to bring too, and cross them off as you go. This way you won’t end up with all your favourite shirts in your wardrobe but no jacket.

Over packing creates worry on the return trip that you’ll exceed your baggage weight requirements and has you feeling like you can’t shop freely. You definitely want to avoid that on your next trip.

  1. Not Checking Your Phone Plan

If you’re coming from overseas, you’ll need to check your international roaming settings are switched on and find out what your fees will be with your current provider. If you’re travelling interstate, you want to make sure you have a decent data package so that you can use your mobile when you aren’t within an area that has free Wi-Fi.

  1. Forgetting to Tell Your Bank about Your Travelling Plans

Banks are pretty switched on when it comes to fraud. If they notice that your bank account suddenly has numerous transactions from a foreign country, they may freeze it until they get in contact with you. Reduce the likelihood of this happening by letting them know about your travel plans before you depart.

  1. Forgetting to Charge Your Phone Regularly

Just when you think your phone is fine, suddenly you’ve been out and about for half the day and its gone flat. The best way to avoid this is by putting it on charge, even when it’s ¾ full in battery life. In fact, you can recharge your phone every time you are near a power point if necessary. This will stop you from being stuck without it when you need it most. You can also carry car chargers and portable chargers if you’re worried about losing charge while you’re on the move.

  1. Doing Only Minimal Research on Your Destination

It’s good to be spontaneous when you’re heading somewhere new, but that doesn’t mean you can’t familiarise yourself with the area before you go. Avoid missing places you really wanted to see by making sure you know they exist before you get there. You don’t want to come home and realise you actually missed attractions that you know you would have really enjoyed.

  1. Make Sure You Stay in the Perfect Accommodation

Don’t make the mistake of staying in a stuffy hotel or somewhere that doesn’t offer you the comfort of your own home. For the perfect all-in-one accommodation package, you can’t go past Brisbane Holiday Village. Unwind, take a swim, have something to eat, play some mini golf and enjoy yourself all in the one place! Contact us today to find out more.

Benefits of Meeting New People When Travelling

To travel is to learn, to experience new things, to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people!

There are plenty of positives to adding new people to your friendship group. With shared BBQ areas, sports facilities and swimming pools, Brisbane Holiday Village offers the perfect setting for socialising and making new friends.

From new adventures to support, we’ve got five awesome reasons why you should try to make new friends on your next trip!

1.   You Might Learn Something New

Sometimes we can get too comfortable in our own world, so it’s good to get out there and hear different opinions and perspectives. There are takeaways we can get from talking to new people – we may learn something new or get fresh new ideas.

The things you learn from others may range from cultural interests to travel tips, tasty recipes to random facts. At the very least, you’ll be better equipped for your next trivia night or party conversation!

2.   Enhance Your Communication Skills

Talking to new people is a great way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. When you interact with people from diverse backgrounds, you practice your verbal communication skills.

The more comfortable you get communicating, the more open you’ll be to trying new things in your life. This can lead to benefits in your personal and professional life, providing advantages that last long after your holiday is over.

3.   Teach Your Kids the Value of Friendship

For social and emotional learning, it’s important for our children to make new friends. Friendships enable kids to learn more about empathy, communication and self-esteem, as well as turn-taking and sharing. Brisbane Holiday Village offers a safe and friendly environment for children from diverse backgrounds and ages to interact with each other.

4.   You Might Feel Positive and Happy

Making new friends can be an enriching and rewarding experience, no matter how old you are. When you connect with someone, laugh about something together or share the same interests, there can be something really fun and exciting about it. Meeting new people might make your holiday getaway even more happy and positive!

5.   Be Introduced to New Opportunities

New friends may encourage you to try new activities and expose you to things that you would never have thought you’d like before. Never thought you’d ride that rollercoaster? Your enthusiastic new friend might change your mind, giving you a great experience you’ll never forget. Instead of feeling nervous, it’s good to embrace challenges. After all, what have you got to lose?

Solo Vs Group Travel: Which Is Best?

Is travel all about exploring alone or is it better to have someone to share your special travel memories with?

The debate between solo and group travel is an ongoing one, with supporters in both corners.

At Brisbane Holiday Village, we know that everyone has different needs and preferences, which is why we’ve come up with a quick list of pros and cons to help you compare and decide which travel option is best for you.

The Pros and Cons of Solo Travel

Pros

  • Meeting new people
    • Meeting other travellers is one of the benefits of travelling alone. A lot of solo travellers seem to end up in the same spots, so you have a chance to meet other people with the same interests.
  • You call the shots
    • The good thing about travelling alone is that you’re the only one responsible for your plans. There’s no fighting over what to do and where to go – you can do what you like, where you like when you want.

Cons

  • Loneliness and safety
    • The downside to being responsible for yourself is that you do not have anyone to experience your memories with. Adding to this, if you get lost or end up in trouble, you only have yourself to solve the problem.

The pros and cons of Group Travel

Pros

  • Create lasting memories
    • When you travel in a group, you’ll have people to share your experiences and frustrations with. Plus, they might suggest and encourage you to do something fun that you might have never thought of doing by yourself.
  • Spend quality time
    • If you don’t get to see your friends and family as much as you’d like then group travel is also a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones.
  • Save money:
    • More often than not, it works out cheaper when you split the cost of shared accommodation, activities and food when in groups.

Cons

  • Different interests: In groups, it can sometimes be hard to come to agreements on what everyone wants to do. It can also be difficult dealing with different budgets.

Best Things To Do With Kids On A Rainy Day

Don’t let rain ruin your holiday to Brisbane. Instead, have a couple of great wet-weather saviours up your sleeve. Luckily, Brisbane has a number of fun indoor activities to choose from. From interactive museums to a bouncy trampoline park, try one of these nine activity ideas for when the heavens open.

Play a Board Game

Make your own fun in your holiday cabin or in our holiday park’s welcome lounge. No matter how young or old your kids are, board games are a traditional family favourite. From Monopoly to Chess and Family Feud, they’ll surely be entertained for hours.

Explore the Queensland Museum or Sciencentre

One of the best things about a holiday is getting out and exploring, and the rain doesn’t have to stop you! Go indoors and explore Natural History at the Queensland Museum or Science at Sciencentre for a fun-filled day of learning and activities.

Get Creative at Plaster Fun House

Plaster Fun House is a fun place to spend the morning or afternoon with your children. From $3 per piece, the kids will be able to get creative, painting pre-prepared plaster creations. With hundreds of plaster pieces to choose from, it’s as much fun for you as it is for your kids.

Get Interactive at the Workshop Rail Museum

An exciting adventure for children and rail enthusiasts of all ages, the Workshop Rail Museum in Ipswich brings history to life with a range of hands-on exhibits.

Bowling and Ice Skating

Always a classic option, bowling and ice skating can still draw a happy crowd. Tucked away amongst the fashion set in the Wintergarden, Strike Bowling in Brisbane is a kid’s dream. Or, in both North and South Brisbane, Ice World is a great place for kids to skate around while listening to entertaining music.

Watch a Movie

It’s a time honoured classic, but nothing beats eating some popcorn while you enjoy watching a movie on the big screen. Try Event Cinemas; wherever you find yourself, the franchise has a couple of locations in Brisbane to choose from.

Go Shopping at Westfield Garden City

In the suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt, Westfield Garden City is one of Brisbane’s major shopping centres. Spend hours entertaining your kids by exploring, shopping, and eating at one of the 440 stores, cafes and restaurants.

Jump around at Sky Zone

Head to Sky Zone where your kids can jump and play on the hundreds of trampolines. Toddler areas are available, and if your little ones get bored of jumping, there’s also the Skyland on site – Brisbane’s only three storey laser tag arena.

When the rain clears up, check out our other top child-friendly things to do in Brisbane.

Packing Hacks for Travelling Light

Setting off on your next adventure?

Are you a world-class packing procrastinator? A ‘throw-everything in’ traveller? Or an ‘I don’t know what to pack so I pack the wrong stuff and now I have no clothes.. or food’.. voyager?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there: hauling WAY too much stuff away with us, only to realise a day or two into our camping holiday that we won’t need half of it, and what we do need.. we left behind.. So, to save your spine (and your sanity), here are some simple tips on how to travel light – you’ll thank us later.

1.   Don’t Pack Last Minute

Seriously! When we pack at the last minute, we’re likely to pack more than we need because we’re not taking the time to think about it. Start packing, or at least thinking about what you might need, a few days before leaving.

If you don’t want your holiday to turn into a screaming-fest of overstuffed backpacks, sluggish hikes and unnecessary expenses (like having to buy an entire new tub of margarine even though you just bought a new one back at home) make sure you pack these essential items:

  • Food
    • Start thinking about the quantities of food you may need, what sort of facilities will be available to you, if the food requires refrigeration or if it spoils easily. You may want to reconsider some of the more delicate options, unless they will be consumed early in the trip.
  • First Aid (including bug repellant)
    • Very important! You never know when you need it and if you forget it, you’ll wish you didn’t!
  • Toys, books, boardgames or other technology-free entertainment options
    • Think about bringing something to entertain everyone – If you’re going camping, you’ll probably be spending some close-quarters time with your companions. Avoid arguments where possible!
  • Clothes
    • Yes, really! but actually consider what you really NEED. You’re probably not going to need high heals and a sparkly party dress if you’re going camping with the family
  • Bedding
    • Relaxation is often the reason behind a holiday or camping trip, so it makes sense to ensure your night will be a comfortable one
  • Empty Zip-lock Bags
    • Avoid losing little bits and pieces, save left over food, store spices, ropes, toiletries, etc, or stop your toothbrush becoming a furry petrie-dish of other people’s hair and germs… Zip-lock bags are always a good idea!
  • Batteries of various sizes
    • Ensure you’re always prepared! Also great to use as a bargaining tool: “I’ll give you my spare battery if you give me that big fish you caught this morning..”

2.   Go for Multi-Functionality

It sounds simple, but giving priority to items that serve more than one purpose can easily cut your load. Does that towel double up as a blanket? Can those shoes be worn in the day and the night? If yes, choose them over items that can’t.

3.   Check the Facilities

If you’re camping or staying in a holiday park, check the facilities beforehand. There might already be a kitchen, so you might not need to pack your cooker or utensils. They also might provide pillows and bedding so you can ditch the sleeping bags. If they’ve got an on-site hairdryer, you can leave that at home too… you get the idea!

4.   Minimise Food and Toiletries

If you’re only staying for a short amount of time, take some toiletries in small travel bottles. You can also check if the place you’re going to has a restaurant or shops nearby. If it does, you won’t need to go crazy stocking up on food and toiletries. You can always buy what you need when you get there.

5.   Create an Itinerary

When it comes to packing light, an itinerary can be an essential guide to what stays in and what’s left out. For example, if you’re going to be playing sports and you know that there is a laundry service near or on your accommodation, you may only need to take one set of sports clothes, rather than several.

7 Things You Should Always Pack for a Road Trip

Road trips with children usually go one of three ways

They can be:

  1. Enjoyable OR
  2. Bearable OR
  3. Downright painful

Careful planning is essential to reduce the likelihood of constant the whining from the back seat which, if your children are young enough, can develop into cries and screams.

Travelling by car is generally cheaper and more convenient. It also gives you much more flexibility when it comes to visiting attractions in your chosen holiday surrounds. So it really is worth doing.

If you don’t want your car to turn into a scream fest, make sure you pack these essential items:

  1. Food Glorious Food

Pack plenty of food including lunch and snacks. You might be planning to stop for lunch, but you’ll be thankful that you have some sandwiches if your children are snoozing and you don’t want to wake them up by stopping the car.

  1. First Aid (including bug repellant)

You never know when you need it and if you forget it, you’ll wish you didn’t!

Have a first aid kit in the car that is equipped with everything you need for scrapes and scratches. Make sure it contains Panadol, insect repellent and some sunscreen. If you stop at a playground along the way, you’ll have these essentials covered without having to dig through suitcases.

  1. Toys

Think about bringing something to entertain everyone – If you’re going camping, you’ll probably be spending some close-quarters time with your companions. Avoid arguments where possible!

While favourite old toys are important,  if you have a hidden goodie bag in the front seat containing little new toys, you can dig one out each time your child starts to whimper. Hopefully, it’ll give you another good hour of peace and quiet. They don’t have to be anything major – matchbox cars, colouring books or figurines are great for young children. A new rattle or soft toy is perfect for babies.

  1. Change of Clothes

Your car boot is probably packed to the brink and you can be sure that your child will fall into a muddy puddle or have a toileting accident when you don’t have a change of clothes. Don’t risk needing to get everything out of the boot to reach a spare pair of pants. Have a change of clothes for every child, regardless of age, somewhere in the front or backseat.

  1. Empty Zip-lock Bags

Another reason your children might need a change of clothes is if they get carsick. Reduce the likelihood of that awful smell in your car by placing zip-lock bags beside each child in the backseat.

  1. Batteries of Various Sizes

You don’t want a favourite toy running out of batteries within the first hour of your trip. Packing batteries will mean the fix is easy and painless.

Why a Holiday Village Beats a Hotel

Why a Holiday Village Beats a Hotel

Why a Holiday Village Beats a Hotel

Hotels might sell themselves as luxurious, affordable retreats, but if you look into alternatives you’ll find that your money can be better spent elsewhere. By looking at alternatives, you can get everything a hotel has to offer and more.

Holiday Villages offer a great deal more than a hotel does. Once you have your first experience, you won’t go back to a matchbox-sized hotel room.

Here just some of the reasons why a holiday village beats a hotel:

Self-Contained Accommodation

Hotels can get very expensive and inconvenient when you don’t have access to a full-sized fridge and kitchen. Late night snacks, easy breakfasts and BBQs for lunch beat the inconvenience and expense of having nothing but a mini-bar to choose from.

Extra Activities On-Site

If you’re lucky, a hotel might have a gym, maybe a swimming pool and not much else in terms of activities to do on-site. Why not go for something that offers plenty of features including mini golf, resort style swimming pools and so much more.

Opportunities to Meet New People

It’s easy to find yourself holed up inside the 4 walls of your hotel room. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. You might find yourself making plenty of new connections at a holiday village where the relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes it easy to get chatting to those around you.

Convenient Parking Spaces

Why pay extra for parking at a hotel or even worse, find yourself stuck with street parking which is neither convenient nor secure. Holiday villages offer safe parking right next to your accommodation, making it easy to pack and unpack your luggage.

A Safer Solution

Holiday parks are simply a safer option that hotels and motels, especially when it comes to family escapes. A holiday village is like its own small community and when you walk out of the door you enter that world. When you stay at a hotel, you open your door to busy streets or strange cities. This poses many dangers for individuals of all ages, but especially children. Stay on the safe side and make a booking at a holiday village.

Room to Move

Stuffy hotel rooms where you eat, sleep and socialise in the one room can be pretty limiting. Imagine holiday cabins with space to lounge, cook, and socialise with a big group. Book cabins side by side with a larger group and you’ll love being able to spend quality time together with plenty of room to move and have fun.

Want to have a holiday where the accommodation ticks all the boxes? You can’t go past Brisbane Holiday Village for perfect family-friendly accommodation. Unwind with us and we’ll give you the whole package. A holiday village is your home away from home and so much more! Contact us today to discuss our cabin and campsite options.

Why a Holiday Village is Perfect for a School Camp

Why a Holiday Village is Perfect for a School Camp

When it comes to organising a school camp, it can be so hard to find that middle-ground accommodation. Why a Holiday Village is Perfect for a School Camp

When it comes to organising a school camp, it can be so hard to find that middle-ground accommodation. The locations usually vary between being dormitory-like and being high-end luxury that your school simply can’t afford.

Next time you’re organising a school camp, think outside the box and consider a Holiday Village in Brisbane. Here’s why it’s the perfect decision for your school group:

They Provide Activities On-Site

When you’re not out and about, it can be hard to keep the kids entertained if there’s nothing to do on-site. Brisbane Holiday Village boasts an 18-hole mini golf course, playgrounds, a pool area, tennis court, table tennis and even a multi-purpose sports field. With these facilities, there will never be a dull moment.

Children Are in a Safe and Secure Environment

No matter how old the children are, they are still in your duty of care. You want them to be in a safe and secure environment at all times. A holiday village will keep them away from busy roads and streets.

It’s Comfortable and Relaxing for the Teachers Too

Once the lights are out for the students, the teachers get the time to relax and they definitely deserve that time. School camps can be completely exhausting and teachers are often spending time away from their own children and loved ones, which can be difficult. Having a space with a full kitchen, comfortable beds and the amenities they need will give them the chance to unwind in a space that feels like home.

There’s On-Site Catering

Holiday villages are used to catering for large groups. That can make things easier when you are running on a tight schedule with your children. If meals run late then it could mean missing out on planned activities, which definitely isn’t something you want. You also don’t want to deal with hungry children. Onsite catering will keep your students fed and your schedule running smoothly.

They’re Often Close to Local Attractions Suitable for Children

Time is of the essence when it comes to school camps and you certainly don’t want to waste time travelling long distances. Holiday villages are well-suited for families and school groups alike because they are located close to many local attractions and activities suited to children. Brisbane Holiday village is located only 20 minutes from Dreamworld, WhiteWater world, Wet ‘n’ Wild and Movie World.

They’re the Right Price

Holiday villages offer competitive prices for school groups. Whether you are looking at occupying cabins or a campsite, you will be sure to find reasonable prices for the facilities provided.

If you haven’t considered a holiday village in Brisbane for your next school camp, you definitely should! Brisbane Holiday Village ticks all the boxes and will have your students and teachers raving about the trip! Contact us today for more information.

Corporate Accommodation in Brisbane: how to get the best bang for your buck

Choosing corporate accommodation in Brisbane can be tricky. You want to ensure you have the right blend of a professional, yet relaxed space. Corporate Accommodation in Brisbane: how to get the best bang for your buck

Choosing corporate accommodation in Brisbane can be tricky. You want to ensure you have the right blend of a professional, yet relaxed space. It needs to have all the comforts of a hotel but not feel ‘stuffy’ or as though where people are isolated from one another in small rooms.

So just how do you go about choosing corporate accommodation in Brisbane?

Here are some questions you should ask yourself before you make your choice.

Does it Have a Friendly Atmosphere?

Brisbane has a massive amount of accommodation options available. But if you’re looking for something affordable, whilst not compromising on quality, with a friendly atmosphere, you might want to consider a holiday village. A holiday village will feel relaxing immediately upon entering, rather than a high-end hotel where your clients or employees feel stifled.

Is There Room for Large Groups?

A large room for groups offers a unique way for employees or clients to bond. They can also ensure that the social connections continue into the night in a relaxed setting. Consider large cabins for your next corporate accommodation.

Is There a Restaurant On-Site?

It’s much easier if large groups don’t need to travel in multiple cars to try and find restaurants in an unfamiliar city. If the accommodation has a restaurant on site, you won’t need to worry about finding a place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They may also have catering options – perfect for your meetings.

Are There Corporate Meeting Rooms Available?

Speaking of meetings, why not have it all in the one space? Accommodation that offers: a restaurant, accommodation and a corporate meeting room in the one place, means that you’ll be able to maximise time spent with the group. Rather than being on the road travelling from place to place, you’ll spend your precious time together.
