Community – the sense of belonging and acceptance regardless of age, race, beliefs and background, the ability of a group to welcome everyone’s creativity

This quote perfectly summarises the colour and vibrancy of West End, an inner-city suburb of Brisbane. A community made up of artists, professionals, students and families. Those who earn little live harmoniously with those who earn plenty. Only a short bus or ferry ride to Brisbane’s CBD and yet abundant with leafy suburban streets. Community gardens are flourishing, local musicians are celebrated, with a cuisine option to suit even the most adventurous foodie. West End encapsulates all human experience, there is something for the hippie, the book worm, the artist and even the athlete in all of us. Rich in organic food, nightlife, and holistic living, if you are brave enough to step out of the mainstream then West End is worth a visit.

The Foodie

Googling places to eat in West End can be an overwhelming experience with ample choices and high reviews to boot, making even the most decisive person second guess themselves.

Why don’t you start your foodie experience at the MorningAfter. The menu ranges from eggs on toast to a gourmet crab omelette and breakfast carbonara with gluten, vegetarian and vegan friendly options.

If you’re not really a morning person, then the lunch options in West End are just as indulgent.

Take a casual stroll to Little Red Dumpling, the name doesn’t lead you astray as they specialise in everything dumpling, from pan-fried to steamed! Their philosophy is simple ‘sip beer, consume dumpling’ and you’ll be extremely happy to do so with a menu that delights all the senses.

West End doesn’t forget the night owls, in fact they celebrate them. Chop Chop Changs will kick start your nightlife experience covering all your cravings from street food, chargrill, temple stall, curry, and wok. Those looking for a little extra, will be delighted with their drinks menu.

If a nightcap is your thing then you’ll be right at home in one of Brisbane’s Best Cocktail Bars. Lychee Lounge will take care of all your cocktail needs and even make your Instagram followers jealous with decadent drink designs and exotic interior.

The Artist

Montana Art Project firmly believes that everyone can be an artist in their own unique way, with paint and sip nights that celebrate the Picassos as well as the finger painters.

They encourage creative expression through their contemporary classes by allowing guests free reign to splash paint around and try new techniques with the guidance of an instructor. The very best part about this experience is the ability to refine the piece with stencils meaning you could even hang it on your wall at home!

The Plant Lover

For those with a newly found plant obsession, West End has your needs covered! Mappin’s Nursery & Aquarium is an inner-city oasis with knowledgeable staff to not only fuel your leafy addiction but keep your babies green and thriving! The converted warehouse is not only home to a huge range of plants and fish, you will also find industry recognised workshops for Terrariums, Miniature Japanese Gardens, Kokedama and Ceramics, there’s even some quirky wall art! Even if plants aren’t really your thing, a walk through this eclectic space is well worth it.

The Athlete

If you want to work off the foodie experience, grab your wheels of choice with an abundance of council bicycles and motorised scooters for hire. Utilise the river walk, approximately 4km from Orleigh Park to the Gallery of Modern Art, an easy grade walk with 5 star views and plenty of rest stops.

Orleigh Park should not be overlooked as simply the end or beginning of a river walk, it is a breath of fresh air in the big smoke, a small piece of tranquillity in the busyness of inner-city living. Pull up your yoga mat and stretch it out under the array of hundred-year-old fig trees.

Organic Living

Davies Park Markets is your one stop shop for fresh produce, decadent meals, live music, unique fashion trends and market goodies all under a canopy of magnificent trees by the riverside. They run every Saturday from 6am – 2pm at Montague Road and Jane Street, West End.

If 2020 taught us anything, it is the importance of health! At West End Happy Herbs, they acknowledge the beneficial properties of holistic well-being and natural integrated healthcare. A quirky space that encourages their customers to find alternative medicines, supplements and herbs that promotes customers to evolve into their best self.

Something for the Book Worms

It is nearly impossible to miss the vibranct exterior of Bent Books while in West End. That vibrancy only intensifies once you walk into the second-hand bookshop, coloured with adventure, history, travel, and unusual treasures to tantalise the mind.
