Dreamworld’s Tiger Island residents welcome two adorable tiger cubs!

The team at Dreamworld and proud tiger parents Adira (mum) and Pi (dad) welcomed 2 brother cubs on Friday 26 April 2019. After a marathon sift through over 2500 name entries submitted by guests of the park, Dreamworld is excited to present: Javi and Zakari (ZE-CAR-EE)! With the cubs being two of the newest ambassadors for the critically endangered tiger species, Dreamworld had a particular focus on names that reflect the role they play in supporting their wild cousins. “Javi means victorious and Zakari is associated with individuals who have a desire to inspire others in a higher cause, which goes hand-in-hand (or paw-in-paw) with Dreamworld’s global conservation drive” said Al Mucci, General Manager Life Sciences. “Through the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation, we are ensuring the longevity of Tiger Island and the tiger species through our breeding program and funding the important conservation work protecting wild tigers internationally”. The cubs have been hidden away in the Dreamworld nursery for the past 6 weeks and are now ready for their debut in the Tiger Island cub display area. Weighing in at a healthy 6.06 kilograms and 5.42 kilograms, the fast-growing cubs have multiplied their birth weight by over four times! From the 14th June, Javi and Zakari will be stepping out into the park from the exploring their surroundings to socialise and interact with guests – don’t miss your chance to see them as cubs!

Wild Tiger Conservation Facts

  • Tigers are listed as critically endangered, which classifies them as Very High Risk of Extinction in the Wild.
  • Due to poaching and deforestation, it is estimated there are fewer than 4,000 wild tigers in the world today.
  • The Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation has contributed more than $3 million toward Tiger Conservation programs since launching in 2012.
  • Money raised at Dreamworld for our Wildlife Foundation goes directly to fund frontline conservation activities in tiger conservation areas in Russia and Indonesia.
  • Dreamworld provides funding to organisations such as WildCats Conservation Alliance (formerly 21st Century Tiger), Fauna and Flora International and The Pheonix Fund. These organisations police critical tiger habitat to find and destroy tiger traps, and track and arrest poachers. They also run programs in local communities to educate people on the critically endangered status of wild tigers.
  • All tigers at Dreamworld were bred in wildlife centres. None of the tigers at Dreamworld were removed from the wild.
  • Dreamworld subscribes to an all of life care policy. All tiger cubs bred at Dreamworld are retained at Dreamworld or transferred to other accredited zoological parks.
