State of Origin 2019

The 2019 State of Origin Series gets underway in Brisbane on Wednesday 5 June and this is a series that will have us all on the edge of our seats – no matter what the result!

Queensland will go into the 2019 State of Origin series without Billy Slater, who won the Wally Lewis player of the series in 2018. This will be the first series since 2003 that Queensland will be without Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk or Billy Slater. But don’t worry Maroons fans, as Queensland have three of the game’s most exciting young talents, Kaylen Ponga, Cameron Munster and Michael Morgan, all of whom coach Kevin Walters will desperately be trying to fit in his best 17.

On the back of a 2-1 series win last year, New South Wales enter game one as a short-priced favourite, with bookies having them at $1.45 to lift the Origin Shield. But with early season injuries and suspensions to key back rowers Tyson Frizell and Jack de Belin, the preparation of the Blues has been hampered in the lead up to Game 1. The Blues will rely on all the youngsters they blooded in 2018, with their 14 total debutants being the most in an Origin game since the inaugural match in 1980.

This year promises to be exciting with the return of Origin to Perth for Game 2 on Sunday night 23 June before the series ends in Sydney on 10 July. Statistics have shown that it is basically impossible to win the series after losing Game 1, with the winner of game 1 going on to win the series on 75% of occasions. As a result, all eyes will be on the battle of Brisbane come 5 June.

Queensland enter this year right where they want to be, as big underdogs. Can New South Wales finally take control and win 2 series in a row or will Queensland find a way to win once again against all odds?

How To Have a Stress Free Family Holiday

When it comes to Holidays, it can sometimes feel like you need a holiday after your holiday!

The truth is, while holidays are a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends, you need to lay the groundwork before you go.

Once you have the details down, the big stuff begins to take care of itself. After all – You deserve a stress free holiday too!

Do you remember the family holidays you went on when you were a kid?

The excitement of packing all your holiday clothes; the car, plane or train ride there; your parents setting up the tent or organising the rooms of your cabin – and then the fun! Totally stress free right?

Well… maybe for you!

Don’t worry. We’ve got some great tips for making your next family holiday as stress free as possible!

Location, Location, Location

There is a holiday for everyone – you just need to find it!

While it seems like an obvious starting point, deciding where to take the family can be half the battle.

Should we go somewhere new? Somewhere that is renown for being family friendly? Sandy beaches or lush mountains?

The old saying is true – Location matters!

To keep the stress free vibes flowing, make sure to consider:

1. The Weather

  • Do the kids have any allergies or sensitivities to the sun?
  • What about the cold?
  • Many families try to holiday in places with similar weather or temperature to where they live – just with a bit more sun (or a bit less)

2. What will the Kids Learn?

  • There’s always an opportunity to learn something new when on holidays, and there’s no better place to start then when choosing your destination!
  • Think about the things you loved to learn about when you were little
    • Did you like exploring? Maybe pick a place where your kids can explore
    • Enjoy learning new skills? What about a place that offers local attractions or fun facilities?
  • Mixing in some new culture, a local language or a new experience, can not only be fun, but while the kids are entertained you don’t need to stress!

3. Are we nearly there yet?

  • Travel time can put a huge dent in the idea of ‘stress free’. The last thing you want is to arrive at your holiday destination after a tense car ride of ‘don’t make me turn this car around’.
  • This will depend on your children – their ages and temperaments.
  • Ask yourself:
    • Will they stay entertained throughout the journey? Or should you look closer to home?

4. Local Amenities

Check that off the list

The last thing you want to do is panic halfway down the driveway, thinking that you have forgotten something!

To keep things stress free, we recommend making a list of all essential items required for your holiday.

Here are some essentials that often get forgotten in the excitement of preparing for your holiday:

  • Charger cables – phones, tablets, camera
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Bug repellents
  • Wet wipes
  • Shampoo / conditioner / body wash
  • Sun lotion
  • Bandaids
  • Sanitary products
  • Aftersun (just in case)
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Antihistamines, Antiseptics and other essential or prescription medicines
  • For glasses or contact wearers:  lens cleaning wipes, contact solution and contact cases

Home Safety

Worrying about the safety of your home while you’re away definitely isn’t something you want to do!

Setting up a light switch on a timer may be enough to convince bad guys that someone is home for a couple days, but criminals can be rather savvy and if you’re going on holidays for more than a couple nights you may want to consider:

  • Having someone you know and trust keep an eye on your house, put your bins in and out and check your mail.
  • Call them from time to time for peace of mind that your home is safe and secure.

Forget about Work

You’ve got your destination chosen, your list of holiday essentials packed, your home is looked after, you’re one foot out the door.. and you’re thinking about.. work.

Nothing ruins a holiday faster than the sudden realisation that you forgot to submit your annual leave form at work.

  • While you’re planning your holiday, don’t forget to plan your work schedule too.
    • You may not be able to complete all your current projects before you leave, so remember to:
      • Prioritise your tasks – make sure you can tick off everything you’d hoped to have done.
      • Delegate the things that will need doing while you’re away.
  • Set up an auto reply on your emails
    • This will not only help you feel like you are actually on holiday, it will let your colleagues know too.
    • Invite the sender to contact another person in your department if the enquiry is urgent, or wait until you get back.
  • Submit your annual leave form ASAP.
    • We’re not kidding!
    • The more notice you give your colleagues, associates and team members, the easier it will be to keep them briefed about projects and tasks that need to be completed while you are enjoying your stress free holiday!

On the Road

Earlier, we mentioned the consideration of travel time. Wherever you choose to holiday – be it near or far – we have some tips to keep the little ones from turning your family holiday into a horror-day:

Babies

  • Try to time your departure, and as much driving as possible, with your bub’s regular sleeps.
  • Pack a thermos for tea and coffee, as well as some snacks for the adults – that way if the baby stays asleep you can just keep driving.

Toddlers

  • Leaving an hour or two before a toddler’s day sleep can work well – they get into the rhythm of travel and then they sleep.

Older Kids

  • For kids who are beyond the need for day naps (although, who’s really too old to nap?) have a selection of the following on hand:
    • Audio books (or books in general)
    • iPad stocked (for travel use only – this sucker goes away when you arrive at your destination)
    • Toys
    • Car Games
    • consider a ‘stable table’ for craft, toy cars, and generally ensuring you don’t have to stop too often to pick things up off the floor.
    • Snacks and drinks to eliminate the “I’m hungrys” 10 minutes into the trip.
    • Remember, stopping for a picnic lunch at a playground is still mandatory.

Enjoy your Holiday!

Not only does Brisbane Holiday Village offer a great range of holiday cabinscaravan sites, and camping accommodation, but we’re here for your health! We offer amazing facilities and a tropical resort-style feel to your holiday that will leave you refreshed, stress free and ready to take on the world again!

Impromptu Adventures – Quick Tips for a Last-Minute Trip

Impromptu Adventures – Quick Tips for a Last-Minute Trip

Feeling spontaneous? Need to skip town?

The need for a holiday can strike at any time…

The world is your oyster, but where to start?

Putting a together last-minute trip – whether out of impulse or necessity – doesn’t have to break the bank… or you!

Ever decided to simply pack the car and head to your favourite holiday cabin in Brisbane for a quick time-out? Or maybe a a desire to head out to some faraway place, find a caravan park or campground and relax for the weekend?

Studies show that at nearly 15% of Aussies have planned a last-minute trip just one week prior to their departure. Stress at work, the need for a break, and wanting to spend time with family often drives our decisions to get away from it all – and FAST!

Planning a last-minute trip might sound like an oxymoron, but all travel requires at least a small amount of consideration.

Consider this…

Think local (ish)…

Australian cities are always popular for a last-minute trip. They are accessible, affordable, don’t require a visa or a passport (unless you’re travelling to Australia.. in which case, you’ve clearly by-passed the ‘pack-your-car’ section), offer a great respite from the everyday grind and there are always great things to do with friends, family and even solo!

Look for Deals and Best Rates

Before you pack your bags and fly out the door, jump online and check for last-minute deals.

Quite often caravan parks and holiday villages will have discounts available – which you can take advantage of and save some money to spend on your quick getaway.

If you prefer to book online, always compare rates quoted on 3rd party sites and booking apps to those on the hotel’s own site. There are some amazing deals out there, but by checking a hotel’s website it’s often cheeper to simply book direct!

For example: Brisbane Holiday Village offers the best rates of all 3rd party bookings sites that list our accommodation – with 10% off daily rates for booking direct!

Bang for your Buck

While you’re checking out the best rates, high and low seasons, and generally stalking the internet for the best deal, make sure you don’t forget about what it is you’re actually getting.

You may secure a room for a week at a cool hotel for $450.. But, your room may also be right above the restaurant that hosts open-mic karaoke from 6 – 10 every night, charges $25 for 5 minutes of dial-up internet and requires a VIP swipe card in order to use any of the facilities – which conveniently (or inconveniently), wasn’t part of your package.

The point is: Check the facilities on offer!

At Brisbane Holiday Village, we have a huge range of facilities and nearly all of them are FREE!

  • 18-hole Mini Golf (small fee to hire putter)
  • BBQ Area
  • Tennis Court (small fee to hire tennis racket and balls, but you can use your own for free if you have them)
  • On-Site Restaurant – Lagoona Resort Restaurant
  • Resort-style Pool
  • Kid’s Splash Pool
  • Multi-purpose Sports Field
  • Playgrounds
  • Instant PhotoBooth
  • Table Tennis (small fee to hire paddles and balls, but you can use your own for free if you have them)
  • Bike Track
  • Bird Feeding
  • Amenity Blocks
  • Laundries (coin operated machines)
  • Welcome Lounge

Check Social Media and Sign-up for Newsletters

Social Media has everything these days. It can often be a bit of a hassle for a hotel or resort to update their whole website for just a few spare rooms – So check the Socials! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, can be a haven of last-minute trip deals. You don’t have to see their posts all the time – but they’ll be there when you need them!

Another good idea is to sign up to a few online newsletters (like ours)– there may be a last-minute trip with your name on it! Most holiday parks aren’t spammy with their emails (we’re not) – once a month you’ll receive deals, specials, prizes, tips and tricks for all your holiday needs!

Check the Bank Balance

This one seems fairly obvious.. but you don’t want to plan a last-minute trip without ensuring that you do, in fact, have enough money to get you there and back!

Make sure that your everyday transaction account has enough money in it to get you to through your trip.

  • Remember that not everywhere accepts cards (and some places even levy a surcharge).
  • Have a back-up plan: it might be worth transferring some money across from your savings just to make sure that you’re covered.

The best way to ensure that your last-minute trip is budget friendly, is to ensure that it does fit in your budget!

Don’t Forget the Essentials

Again with the obviousness.. but once you’ve booked your trip – don’t run out the door just yet!

While it can be tempting to rush and pack quickly, this can lead to inconvenience when you arrive and find that all your underwear (or that very important medication) was left back at home, sitting on the kitchen bench.

Save yourself the hassle of being without your essentials, and the spending needless money to replace them, and double check to make sure that you’ve packed your toiletries, medications and other things that you just can’t live without.

If you do happen to forget things (because you’ll, of course, be staying with us #shameless), Brisbane Holiday Village has its very own convenience store that’s chock full of essential toiletries and food!

Fuel in the Tank?

There’s nothing worse than a getaway car that breaks down before your house leaves your review mirror..

That’s not to say ‘get a full service done’ before you leave.

Simply stop at a servo on the way, fill the tank, check your oil, water and coolant levels and make sure that your ride has the best chance of leaving your worries in the dust!

Think of the money you’ll save if you take 3 minutes to fill the coolant up or top up the water. Better spending 3 minutes and $6 on coolant, than a 4 hour walk, a new radiator hose and getting heatstroke whilst waiting for a truck to tow your car!

Get travelling!

Go forth and book your last-minute trip!

If you’ve got the wanderlust bug and need an excuse to set off on a holiday, tell everyone, that science demands that you take this holiday… or you will die!
Ok, that’s not completely true BUT research has revealed that going on holiday helps you live longer!

The study says…

The University of Helsinki recently published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Ageing. The 40-year-long study found people who take less than three weeks off work annually were 37% more likely to die young compared to those that gave higher priority to their holiday time.
The University recruited over 1,200 businessmen between the ages of 40 and 55 in 1974 and 1975. Each participant was at risk for cardiovascular disease, the risk factors including smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or being overweight.
The results were presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Munich, recommending doctors to prescribe “holidays” to at-risk patients instead of a lifestyle overhaul.
This study is just the latest in a string of studies that proves the benefits of travel. Among them, it’s been shown that traveling makes you happier than buying things, makes you more attractive if you’re single and even makes you more employable in the long-term!

Health benefits of holidays

Holidays make people happy! We don’t really need science to tell us that a link exists between holidays and happiness. Going on a holiday can be as important to your health as exercising and eating your fruits and veggies! In fact, scientists claim that: failing to get away from the day-to-day stress of the office overrules any benefits gained from eating healthily and doing exercise.

The key to Happiness

  1. The first element of happiness is positive emotions.
    • Joy, interest, contentment and love.
  2. The next element is meaning.
    • Giving people a sense of purpose.
  3. The final part is engagement.
    • Giving people a sense of involvement.

What else do holidays do to boost life expectancy?

  1.    Reduce depression and stress
    • Taking a break can help reduce stress levels, which in turn can boost immunity.
    • Visiting a new place and taking out time exclusively for yourself and family or friends makes you believe that there is so much more to look forward to in the world.
  2.    Get more sleep
    • Holidays help you to relax and get more sleep which is great for your mental health. Peeple who don’t take regular holidays tend to work longer hours and get less sleep, which has a severe impact on health and productivity in the long term.
  3.    Improve productivity:
    • Going on holidays can help improve your productivity at work. You can come back with a fresh mind and fresh motivation to deliver better at your workplace.

You don’t have to go abroad – take a local break in Brisbane

Holidays don’t necessarily mean travelling to another country. Often big overseas holidays equal big costs, lots of time taken to save and stress involved in planning itinerary, passports etc..

So why not plan for your big overseas holiday every 3-5 years, and in the mean time (the in-between years) why not look local?

Not only does Brisbane Holiday Village offer a great range of holiday cabinscaravan sites, and camping accommodation, but we’re here for your health! We offer amazing facilities and a tropical resort-style feel to your holiday that will leave you refreshed and ready to take on the world again!

Solar Panel Systems: Eco-friendly sustainability on the rise at BHV

Being sustainable and responsible for the environment is becoming more and more important in this day and age. That’s why Brisbane Holiday Village have installed a massive 50KW solar panel grid system to help us be as environmentally sustainable and as eco-friendly as possible!

Solar Panels – the new black?

Let’s face it, solar energy is definitely the future trend of energy. These days, many households have converted their homes to run on solar energy – So why not power our business?

Brisbane Holiday Village has spent 7 months developing and installing an awesome solar panel power system! Our Reception, Maintenance and Housekeeping buildings are now powered by the SUN!

We are working hard to be part of the environmental solution, rather than part of the problem!

Why did BHV invest in solar?

  • Energy Alternative – and renewable
Solar energy is a great alternative to replace fossil fuel as the major energy source is the sun, which is (luckily) renewable at absolutely no cost!
  • It’s environmentally friendly – pollution free and no greenhouse gasses
We believe that effort should be made to reduce the pollution entering our environment. Solar panels are able to catch the energy from the sun and convert it to electricity! This means that  solar energy uses less carbon = less coal = smaller carbon footprint!
  • Low/no maintenance
Once installed, solar panel systems can last twenty to thirty years without major maintenance needed! Sure, a check once a year is ideal, but still, a penny saved!
  • Cost effective
Less electricity and power is taken from the power grids in the community. This makes actually makes solar cheeper! The upside is that we can spend all the extra money that we saved on maintenance and power grid costs and put it towards new facilities for our holiday park!

How does solar improve the park?

Brisbane Holiday Village has worked hard to develop our solar system as an extension of our ongoing solar development at the Village. We have (so-far) integrated solar tube lights and solar hot water into our updated amenities blocks, restaurant, housekeeping and reception areas, as well as providing all of our holiday cabins with solar hot water systems.

We have reduced our carbon footprint and impact on the environment, and are looking to invest the savings from our Solar panel program into new facilities and eco-friendly options to prolong the future of our Holiday Park, and our earth!

Not only has the power taken from the community grid been reduced, but our Village can sustain its core running power from the sun!

BHV’s Sustainability Awards

Brisbane Holiday Village has won many awards over the years. One of our proudest achievements is our Gold Level Gumnut Award. The Gumnut Award Program is a progressive rating scheme for holiday, tourist and residential parks that recognises a proven commitment to

environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

To make sure that BHV is part of the environmental solution rather than the problem, we have employed the following initiatives:

  • Installed bore water pumps to minimise the amount of town water used for maintaining the gardens.
  • Planted native trees and shrubs to attract native animals and buffer traffic noises and dust.
  • Fitted low flow shower heads and half flush cisterns.
  • Utilised tank water for the washing machines in the Housekeeping Department.
  • Upgraded two amenity blocks with low flow shower heads and taps; duel flush toilet systems and urinals; gas boosted solar hot water system; solar tube lights and front loader washing machines (saving 100 litres of water per cycle).
  • Installed light sensors, timers and solar hot water systems in all holiday cabins.
  • Provided on-site paper, plastic, glass and cardboard recycling bins.

Top tips for summer camping trips

Think OUTside the box!

Winter is OUT, Summer is IN and we have some awesome tips for your next camping trip!

There are lots of different holiday styles. You can hop on a plane to another country, stay in a holiday cabin a few hours from your home, head to a resort or jump in your car and go camping –  we are very fortunate in this country to have a plethora of amazing holiday choices. However, the limiting factor for most people is balancing the cost of the holiday and where you go/what you do. Unless you’ve found a tree in your backyard that sprouts dollar bills (please hook me up if you have!), you’ll have to do the finance dance like the rest of us.

OR… you could go camping.

Camping – The poor man’s holiday?

What?? No Way!

Exempting your die-hard, best-of-everything campers with waayyyy too much money to spend on completely ridiculous gear (portable solar-powered oven anyone?), camping is fairly inexpensive on the finance front. However, in terms of actual holiday experiences, camping ranks pretty high on the awesome scale.

So what’s great about camping?

Well: It’s outdoors. It’s a novelty. And it offers perfect family time. As someone who relished the family road trips and even slept out in a homemade tent in the backyard, I’m shocked to hear that some camping is often pushed into too-hard basket when it comes to families.

There’s something amazing about camping – it’s an adventure in itself. You don’t need to pay for entertainment – the world is your entertainment! Setting tents up, sleeping under the stars, sitting around and telling ghost stories, daytime fishing, exploring the surrounding area and appreciating the wildlife is what makes camping such a great experience!

While camping and preparation sounds like lots of work is required, it can be surprisingly easy (assuming you don’t try to go professional on your first time out). Remember: you must learn to walk before you run!

Check out our Top Tips for summer camping trips:

1.   Safety First

  • Prepare for all climates
Bring wet weather gear no matter what, including raincoats and a weatherproof fly for the tent. A warm jumper is a good idea too.
  • Pack a repair kit
Some gaffer/duct tape, extra rope, a sewing kit and even spare poles will seem like dead weight in the boot of your car until you need them. Then, one day, they suddenly become your saviour.
The last thing you want to deal with is that cheap tent you skimped out on (see – 2. Equipment) snapping a tent-pole and the rain you thought you avoided, unloads 2 weeks worth of water onto your campsite while you and the taller of your children take turns holding the tent up as your wife watches sullenly and rather wetly from the family car. Heavy-duty tape would have been a much quicker fix.
  • Prioritise First Aid
Check your First Aid kit is fully stocked and replenished before leaving as it will come in handy for emergencies big and small.

2.   Equipment:

  • Check all your equipment before you go
Make sure all the bits and pieces are there before you take off to avoid nasty surprises upon arrival. If equipment is new, give it a trial run at home – specially tents and stoves
  • Borrow equipment
This is a good one for first-timers. If you’re not sure how much you’ll love your first camping adventure, borrow gear from your friends and family (or rent it). This way you won’t skip on buying a cheap tent and end up sleeping in your car while your tent slowly fills with water, hating the experience.
  • Choose the right equipment
When it does come time to buy, think carefully about what your family needs. Choose a tent that is big enough and easy enough to put up and pack away. Buy good quality gear, once. And don’t compromise on quality. Research the products before you buy them, get good value for money and a quality product and you’ll have it for years to come.

3.   Accommodation:

  • Choose the right spot
First-time campers: If you’ve never camped before, consider opting for a Holiday Park where you have access to electricity, shower blocks, camp kitchens, laundries and convenience stores. Holiday Parks (such as Brisbane Holiday Village) also offer a range of facilities and activities for the whole family and are a great way to ease kids into the idea of ‘roughing it’.
Camping should be simple and straightforward, and the cost of camping reflects this. Take the time to find economical campgrounds or plan to travel outside of school holidays and public holidays, as this will save you a substantial amount of money in caravan park fees as many campsites will have a peak and off-peak season with different pricing.
  • Arrive at your campsite in daylight
This makes setting up much easier and allows you to get your bearings. Locate the toilets if there are any and set out bedding before dark.

4.   Food

  • Pack extra food and plenty of water
A spare day’s food and drinking water is important in an emergency, especially on overnight hikes or in remote areas.
  • Keep meals simple but yummy
Pre-made meals are easy to heat up on a stove, and sausages and veggies or bacon and eggs are easily cooked on a barbie. Aim for few ingredients and short preparation time. Don’t forget tea and coffee and definitely don’t forget the chocolate.

5.   General

  • Keep your campsite tidy
Store your food in a dry bag or sealed container, and keep rubbish away from where you sleep. Avoid attracting unwanted insect or animal guests.
  • Pack some creature comforts
After a few weekend trips, you will build up your list of essentials. Some of them may seem like luxuries but they will make the experience ten times easier.
    Bring:

    • a hammer or small mallet to push tent pegs in and a doormat for the tent entrance;
    • a dustpan and broom to sweep away sand and dirt;
    • a ground sheet to lay under your tent;
    • a pump for airbeds;
    • individual torches for everyone including kids (we recommend head torches to keep your hands free for board games)

Happy Camping!
