Plan your Ultimate Lay-By Holiday with Brisbane Holiday Village

Everyone deserves a holiday! Here at Brisbane holiday Village we have solved your budget woes. We are excited to announce that we now offer our guests a ‘book now, pay later’ payment plan option! It’s like Layby, for Holidays!

Take the stress out of planning a family holiday. We have all the information you need on how to put your holiday on lay-by and why a payment plan is the best and most affordable way to budget for your next family holiday!

The Fine Print:

  • Payment plans are available on bookings worth a minimum of $400 per stay.
  • Payment plans are available for stays booked 1 month or more in the future.
  • You have the option to choose from weekly or fortnightly payments.
  • All booking payments will be finalised 14 days prior to your arrival.
  • There is a $1.50 admin fee per transaction.
  • Payment plans only are only offered for stays booked directly on our website.

The Pros of Lay-by Holidays

  • Set and Forget!

One of the best things about setting up a payment plan is the ‘set-and-forget’ mentality! When you set up your payment plan, you can choose to make payments off your accommodation weekly or fortnightly – whatever suits you. Simply set and forget!

  • No interest

Using a lay-by payment plan as opposed to putting your accommodation on your credit card can save you a huge amount of money. Why? Because our payment plans are interest free! While credit cards can charge anywhere from 12% to 30%, our payment plans don’t charge you interest and the $1.50 fee per transaction is affordable and flexible according to your payment structure!

Also, unlike credit cards, if you don’t make a payment, it won’t affect your credit rating.

  • Plan Ahead

Have a special event coming up down the road? A birthday, wedding or other occasion? If you plan for it early, you can pay it off in instalments, easing the pressure off your wallet! With your accommodation under control, you can concentrate on your special event! You could even buy extra special gifts that might cost a bit more, but will be remembered by the recipient. Remember, you’re saving dollars by not using your credit cards!

We hope to see you at our Village, on your Lay-by Holiday!

Tips for Travelling with Kids under 5

Travelling is stressful.  Travelling with kids under 5 is even more stressful.  I should know I’ve got twin boys and I’ve taken countless flights with them and several solo flights.
Along the way, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.

Before Your Trip

Preparation is key.  Gone are the days when you could shove some clothes in a bag the night before.  Now, you need at least a few days to be organised.

Flights

Booking – Book flights for nap time or in the morning.  Little kids are always much happier after a big night’s sleep.  If you book for nap time the take-off will help them to fall asleep.  All that lovely motion and rumbling noise is a winner.

Seats – Pick seats at the back of the plane near the toilets.  Easy for kids potty training or quick nappy changes.  Or, Pick seats at the front with more legroom.  They cost a bit more, but give lots of space for your kids to sprawl out and play a bit.

Avoid – Night flights and late afternoon flights.  Evening flights and night flights always seem to end up with babies who haven’t slept well and cry through most of the flight.  Stressful for you and everyone else on the plane.

Carry-On Packing

Clothes – Pack two changes of clothes in your carry-on luggage.  Accidents of all nature are bound to happen.

Snacks – Hungry kids are cranky kids.  Always have plenty of healthy snacks packed (snacks help to fill up tummies and ease boredom). Pack as many snacks as you can fit.  Too many is better than not enough.

Pack some treats – Bring some little chocolates or lollies that your kids don’t normally have – it might just stop a potential tantrum in its tracks!

Laptop/Tablet/Phone – Download your kids favourite shows from YouTube – this way you still have some entertainment on hand even if you have no wifi.  If you have more than one kid, buy a headphone splitter.  This way both kids can watch the same show with headphones.

Toys and Fun – Don’t take too many toys, just one or two is enough.  I have found it is best to avoid drawing as well.  In a split second your child goes from drawing on the paper to drawing on the plane.

Passports/Money/Itinerary – Goes without saying.

I have found that it great to invest in a small carry on luggage for your child.  My boys love to pull their Spiderman bags and it stops them running off.  This way they can carry their snacks and toys too.

The Flight

Timing – Allow for way too much time. It always takes so much longer to get through all the lines with your kids.

Queues – Look for priority and family lines. Queuing up with kids is horrendous.

The Pram – Ask for a gate ticket for your pram. This way you can keep your pram right up to the gate.  You can also ask for your pram to be delivered to the gate on the other end.  This way you can use your pram as soon as you get off the plane.

The Holiday

Rest Day – On the first day, RELAX. Everyone will be a bit grump and tried.  You may not have slept well with time differences.  Aim for a day by the pool, or enjoying your hotel facilities.  Just take it easy.

Activities – Little kids get tired quickly. Plan for one activity a day.  This can help avoid potential overtired tantrums. Plan activities around naps as much as possible.

Go with the Flow – Be prepared to leave your routine at home. Keep to a good bedtime as much as possible but relax the routine for a holiday.  There might be naps on the go and a few lates nights.

Most of all…have a great time, but, be as prepared as possible.

Keep your family healthy on holiday

When you’ve been planning a family holiday for months, the last thing you want is for you or your little ones to get sick.

Guest Blogger: House Call Doctor has some tips on how you and your family can stay healthy on your holiday.

Slip Slop Slap!

While it may sound basic, it is important to protect yourself and your family from the sun, regardless of the season. Don’t forget to:

Slip on sun protective clothing

Slop on some sunscreen, and

Slap on a protective hat to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion, even in the winter months.

Avoid food poisoning

If you’re on a camping holiday and have limited access to facilities, or if you’re simply enjoying a cheese platter over a matter of hours, it is important to be cautious of contracting food poisoning.

Assistant Clinical Director Dr Ryan Harvey at House Call Doctor recommends you keep food at regulated temperatures to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

“Make sure meats aren’t left out to defrost, cold foods (including eggs) are kept in the fridge, and meats are cooked through before you eat them,” he said.

“Don’t leave snacks like cheeses or dips out for too long in the heat either.”

Exercise!

Staying fit and active is one of the best ways to boost your immune system and avoid getting sick. While holidaying in Queensland, you could have a swim in South Bank, or go for a riverside jog, or even hike Mount Coot-tha. With all the sightseeing and exploring awaiting you on your holiday, this should be easy!

According to Dr Harvey, “Children who are active every day will demonstrate lower blood pressure, stronger muscles and bones and a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.” So while staying healthy on your holiday, you can also set good habits for the health and wellbeing of little ones in your family.

Be aware of travel sickness

If you’re driving for lengthy periods, some family members may get car sick.

  • Keep windows slightly open to let in a breeze
  • Pack some healthy snacks in the car to help reduce nausea.

If you are heading off on a cruise and feel seasick, we recommend you:

  • Keep your eyes on a fixed point or look out to the horizon.
  • Avoid foods that are rich in fats or spicy, as they have been known to worsen symptoms of motion sickness.

Winter Escapes – Brisbane City

Looking for a winter getaway? Brisbane City is the perfect place to take the family!

When the winter chill sets in the beaches of the great South East become an icy exclusion zone for holiday makers. So why not take the family and enjoy a city escape minus the crowds (and the peak holiday season tariffs)?

Brisbane holds a treasure trove of things to do, see and eat, places to stay and offers activities for the whole family!

Winter in Brisbane

Firstly, let’s talk about the weather. Brisbane’s subtropical climate offers a dry and mild winter weather compared to summer’s hot and sweaty days dotted with unpredictable storms and torrential downpours. This means your family has more opportunity to enjoy time outdoors without constantly reaching for the bug spray! The natural beauty of Queensland’s national parks are arguably at their peak in the middle of the year – despite the ‘winter’ label. You’ll also rarely see the overnight temperature in Brisbane drop below 10 degrees in the winter months – so whether you’re camping, caravanning, staying in a hotel, motel or resort, your comfort level won’t be too far removed from summer months.

To make your planning easier, we have pulled together a list of must-dos for the kids!

There are so many great kid friendly things to do in Brisbane including:  bowling, ice skating and Sky Zone trampolining. The Museum of Brisbane, Queensland Museum, Sciencentre and Queensland Rail Museum all offer fun-filled days of learning and activities, offering interactive exhibits on natural history, science, art and more. If the kids are into animals, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Paradise Country and Australia Zoo are all located nearby. Brisbane also has a number of parks and public gardens around including the lush Botanical Gardens  in the City and  Mt Coot-Tha – so why not pack a picnic and have some quality time in the great outdoors with your family?

Speaking of outdoors, why not take the kids to Mt Coot-tha and enjoy a walk to JC Slaughter Falls? You can see art work by local Aboriginal artists along the way.  You can also head up to the lookout for one of the most amazing views of Brisbane city.

Brisbane also offers a number of exciting markets. Located at South Bank, Riverside, Fortitude Valley, New Farm Park and West End – there are plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained and you might be able to pick up some local treasures as well.

South Bank is a must see while in Brisbane, offering playgrounds, plenty of food and shopping options for you and the kids.

Of course, if your kids want even more excitement, theme parks are one of the best places to take the kids whilst on holidays and Brisbane is conveniently located near some of the best. Movieworld, Dreamworld, Seaworld, Aussie World and Underwater World and all located within 30 minutes from the Brisbane City centre.

The options for a fun-filled winter escape are endless – so come and explore Brisbane with the family!

The Fire Gardens are lighting up Brisbane this September!

Together with renowned French artists Compagnie Carabosse, Brisbane Festival is transforming Brisbane City’s 191-year-old Botanic Gardens into a fiery wonderland of sculptures, terracotta urns and handcrafted fire pots – all holding thousands of individual flames!

From Wednesday 11th September through to Saturday 14th September, the Fire Gardens installation offers four magical nights of leaping flames, sculptures that flicker and dance, fiery urns and a soundtrack every bit as brilliant as the garden itself.

While the full Brisbane Festival 2019 program won’t be released until July, the Fire Garden is sure to be a highlight. Festival organisers are expecting around 40,000 people to walk through the gardens and marvel at the custom designed display. There will be 30 giant fire palettes, holding 6720 fire pots and 600 different ‘fire bulbs’ will be hung from trees throughout the gardens. A 120 metre ‘charcoal river’ will also wind through the gardens, with an estimated 14,000kg of charcoal burnt over the 4-night show.

State of Origin 2019

The 2019 State of Origin Series gets underway in Brisbane on Wednesday 5 June and this is a series that will have us all on the edge of our seats – no matter what the result!

Queensland will go into the 2019 State of Origin series without Billy Slater, who won the Wally Lewis player of the series in 2018. This will be the first series since 2003 that Queensland will be without Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk or Billy Slater. But don’t worry Maroons fans, as Queensland have three of the game’s most exciting young talents, Kaylen Ponga, Cameron Munster and Michael Morgan, all of whom coach Kevin Walters will desperately be trying to fit in his best 17.

On the back of a 2-1 series win last year, New South Wales enter game one as a short-priced favourite, with bookies having them at $1.45 to lift the Origin Shield. But with early season injuries and suspensions to key back rowers Tyson Frizell and Jack de Belin, the preparation of the Blues has been hampered in the lead up to Game 1. The Blues will rely on all the youngsters they blooded in 2018, with their 14 total debutants being the most in an Origin game since the inaugural match in 1980.

This year promises to be exciting with the return of Origin to Perth for Game 2 on Sunday night 23 June before the series ends in Sydney on 10 July. Statistics have shown that it is basically impossible to win the series after losing Game 1, with the winner of game 1 going on to win the series on 75% of occasions. As a result, all eyes will be on the battle of Brisbane come 5 June.

Queensland enter this year right where they want to be, as big underdogs. Can New South Wales finally take control and win 2 series in a row or will Queensland find a way to win once again against all odds?

It’s GAME time!

So, you wasted invested all your money on purchasing the best seats in Suncorp Stadium but now you’re broke and still need to sort out the vital pre-game prep and post-game recovery accommodation?

Don’t worry: We’ve got you covered for accommodation that won’t break the bank.

Brisbane Holiday Village is not only close to Suncorp Stadium via car, bus, train, plane and pogo-stick (please can someone do this), but we also offer the BEST rates on our Holiday Cabins, Caravan and Camp Sites when you book directly with us!

We’re located in Eight Mile Plains – only 15 minutes from Brisbane City and 20 minutes from the Gold Coast.

Pre-prep for the game in an awesome cabin (we recommend the Vogue – Luxury and affordability) and enjoy our resort style facilities like our Lagoon Pool, Fully Licensed Restaurant, Tennis Court, BBQ area and sport field to name a few!

Don’t hesitate to give us a call on 07 3341 6133 for more information, or to make a booking!

Transport to the game

It’s lucky Brisbane Holiday Village is so close to Brisbane – we have many options that’ll help you avoid the parking hassles of a jam-packed stadium!

Right outside the Village is a bus stop that takes you to the Garden City Bus Depot (5 mins up the road) where you can catch the shuttle bus to and from the game at Suncorp Stadium! You can also walk up to the Garden City Bus Depot (15 min walk from the Village) to jump on a bus to the train station. There are 2 trains stations located near to the village, both heading into Brisbane City and then onto Suncorp Stadium.

Our front reception also offers a Taxi-Butler push-to-call service if you’d like to call for a taxi.

How To Have a Stress Free Family Holiday

When it comes to Holidays, it can sometimes feel like you need a holiday after your holiday!

The truth is, while holidays are a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends, you need to lay the groundwork before you go.

Once you have the details down, the big stuff begins to take care of itself. After all – You deserve a stress free holiday too!

Do you remember the family holidays you went on when you were a kid?

The excitement of packing all your holiday clothes; the car, plane or train ride there; your parents setting up the tent or organising the rooms of your cabin – and then the fun! Totally stress free right?

Well… maybe for you!

Don’t worry. We’ve got some great tips for making your next family holiday as stress free as possible!

Location, Location, Location

There is a holiday for everyone – you just need to find it!

While it seems like an obvious starting point, deciding where to take the family can be half the battle.

Should we go somewhere new? Somewhere that is renown for being family friendly? Sandy beaches or lush mountains?

The old saying is true – Location matters!

To keep the stress free vibes flowing, make sure to consider:

1. The Weather

  • Do the kids have any allergies or sensitivities to the sun?
  • What about the cold?
  • Many families try to holiday in places with similar weather or temperature to where they live – just with a bit more sun (or a bit less)

2. What will the Kids Learn?

  • There’s always an opportunity to learn something new when on holidays, and there’s no better place to start then when choosing your destination!
  • Think about the things you loved to learn about when you were little
    • Did you like exploring? Maybe pick a place where your kids can explore
    • Enjoy learning new skills? What about a place that offers local attractions or fun facilities?
  • Mixing in some new culture, a local language or a new experience, can not only be fun, but while the kids are entertained you don’t need to stress!

3. Are we nearly there yet?

  • Travel time can put a huge dent in the idea of ‘stress free’. The last thing you want is to arrive at your holiday destination after a tense car ride of ‘don’t make me turn this car around’.
  • This will depend on your children – their ages and temperaments.
  • Ask yourself:
    • Will they stay entertained throughout the journey? Or should you look closer to home?

4. Local Amenities

Check that off the list

The last thing you want to do is panic halfway down the driveway, thinking that you have forgotten something!

To keep things stress free, we recommend making a list of all essential items required for your holiday.

Here are some essentials that often get forgotten in the excitement of preparing for your holiday:

  • Charger cables – phones, tablets, camera
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Bug repellents
  • Wet wipes
  • Shampoo / conditioner / body wash
  • Sun lotion
  • Bandaids
  • Sanitary products
  • Aftersun (just in case)
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Antihistamines, Antiseptics and other essential or prescription medicines
  • For glasses or contact wearers:  lens cleaning wipes, contact solution and contact cases

Home Safety

Worrying about the safety of your home while you’re away definitely isn’t something you want to do!

Setting up a light switch on a timer may be enough to convince bad guys that someone is home for a couple days, but criminals can be rather savvy and if you’re going on holidays for more than a couple nights you may want to consider:

  • Having someone you know and trust keep an eye on your house, put your bins in and out and check your mail.
  • Call them from time to time for peace of mind that your home is safe and secure.

Forget about Work

You’ve got your destination chosen, your list of holiday essentials packed, your home is looked after, you’re one foot out the door.. and you’re thinking about.. work.

Nothing ruins a holiday faster than the sudden realisation that you forgot to submit your annual leave form at work.

  • While you’re planning your holiday, don’t forget to plan your work schedule too.
    • You may not be able to complete all your current projects before you leave, so remember to:
      • Prioritise your tasks – make sure you can tick off everything you’d hoped to have done.
      • Delegate the things that will need doing while you’re away.
  • Set up an auto reply on your emails
    • This will not only help you feel like you are actually on holiday, it will let your colleagues know too.
    • Invite the sender to contact another person in your department if the enquiry is urgent, or wait until you get back.
  • Submit your annual leave form ASAP.
    • We’re not kidding!
    • The more notice you give your colleagues, associates and team members, the easier it will be to keep them briefed about projects and tasks that need to be completed while you are enjoying your stress free holiday!

On the Road

Earlier, we mentioned the consideration of travel time. Wherever you choose to holiday – be it near or far – we have some tips to keep the little ones from turning your family holiday into a horror-day:

Babies

  • Try to time your departure, and as much driving as possible, with your bub’s regular sleeps.
  • Pack a thermos for tea and coffee, as well as some snacks for the adults – that way if the baby stays asleep you can just keep driving.

Toddlers

  • Leaving an hour or two before a toddler’s day sleep can work well – they get into the rhythm of travel and then they sleep.

Older Kids

  • For kids who are beyond the need for day naps (although, who’s really too old to nap?) have a selection of the following on hand:
    • Audio books (or books in general)
    • iPad stocked (for travel use only – this sucker goes away when you arrive at your destination)
    • Toys
    • Car Games
    • consider a ‘stable table’ for craft, toy cars, and generally ensuring you don’t have to stop too often to pick things up off the floor.
    • Snacks and drinks to eliminate the “I’m hungrys” 10 minutes into the trip.
    • Remember, stopping for a picnic lunch at a playground is still mandatory.

Enjoy your Holiday!

Not only does Brisbane Holiday Village offer a great range of holiday cabinscaravan sites, and camping accommodation, but we’re here for your health! We offer amazing facilities and a tropical resort-style feel to your holiday that will leave you refreshed, stress free and ready to take on the world again!

The need for a holiday can strike at any time…

The world is your oyster, but where to start?

Putting a together last-minute trip – whether out of impulse or necessity – doesn’t have to break the bank… or you!

Ever decided to simply pack the car and head to your favourite holiday cabin in Brisbane for a quick time-out? Or maybe a a desire to head out to some faraway place, find a caravan park or campground and relax for the weekend?

Studies show that at nearly 15% of Aussies have planned a last-minute trip just one week prior to their departure. Stress at work, the need for a break, and wanting to spend time with family often drives our decisions to get away from it all – and FAST!

Planning a last-minute trip might sound like an oxymoron, but all travel requires at least a small amount of consideration.

Consider this…

Think local (ish)…

Australian cities are always popular for a last-minute trip. They are accessible, affordable, don’t require a visa or a passport (unless you’re travelling to Australia.. in which case, you’ve clearly by-passed the ‘pack-your-car’ section), offer a great respite from the everyday grind and there are always great things to do with friends, family and even solo!

Look for Deals and Best Rates

Before you pack your bags and fly out the door, jump online and check for last-minute deals.

Quite often caravan parks and holiday villages will have discounts available – which you can take advantage of and save some money to spend on your quick getaway.

If you prefer to book online, always compare rates quoted on 3rd party sites and booking apps to those on the hotel’s own site. There are some amazing deals out there, but by checking a hotel’s website it’s often cheeper to simply book direct!

For example: Brisbane Holiday Village offers the best rates of all 3rd party bookings sites that list our accommodation – with 10% off daily rates for booking direct!

Bang for your Buck

While you’re checking out the best rates, high and low seasons, and generally stalking the internet for the best deal, make sure you don’t forget about what it is you’re actually getting.

You may secure a room for a week at a cool hotel for $450.. But, your room may also be right above the restaurant that hosts open-mic karaoke from 6 – 10 every night, charges $25 for 5 minutes of dial-up internet and requires a VIP swipe card in order to use any of the facilities – which conveniently (or inconveniently), wasn’t part of your package.

The point is: Check the facilities on offer!

At Brisbane Holiday Village, we have a huge range of facilities and nearly all of them are FREE!

  • 18-hole Mini Golf (small fee to hire putter)
  • BBQ Area
  • Tennis Court (small fee to hire tennis racket and balls, but you can use your own for free if you have them)
  • On-Site Restaurant – Lagoona Resort Restaurant
  • Resort-style Pool
  • Kid’s Splash Pool
  • Multi-purpose Sports Field
  • Playgrounds
  • Instant PhotoBooth
  • Table Tennis (small fee to hire paddles and balls, but you can use your own for free if you have them)
  • Bike Track
  • Bird Feeding
  • Amenity Blocks
  • Laundries (coin operated machines)
  • Welcome Lounge

Check Social Media and Sign-up for Newsletters

Social Media has everything these days. It can often be a bit of a hassle for a hotel or resort to update their whole website for just a few spare rooms – So check the Socials! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, can be a haven of last-minute trip deals. You don’t have to see their posts all the time – but they’ll be there when you need them!

Another good idea is to sign up to a few online newsletters (like ours)– there may be a last-minute trip with your name on it! Most holiday parks aren’t spammy with their emails (we’re not) – once a month you’ll receive deals, specials, prizes, tips and tricks for all your holiday needs!

Check the Bank Balance

This one seems fairly obvious.. but you don’t want to plan a last-minute trip without ensuring that you do, in fact, have enough money to get you there and back!

Make sure that your everyday transaction account has enough money in it to get you to through your trip.

  • Remember that not everywhere accepts cards (and some places even levy a surcharge).
  • Have a back-up plan: it might be worth transferring some money across from your savings just to make sure that you’re covered.

The best way to ensure that your last-minute trip is budget friendly, is to ensure that it does fit in your budget!

Don’t Forget the Essentials

Again with the obviousness.. but once you’ve booked your trip – don’t run out the door just yet!

While it can be tempting to rush and pack quickly, this can lead to inconvenience when you arrive and find that all your underwear (or that very important medication) was left back at home, sitting on the kitchen bench.

Save yourself the hassle of being without your essentials, and the spending needless money to replace them, and double check to make sure that you’ve packed your toiletries, medications and other things that you just can’t live without.

If you do happen to forget things (because you’ll, of course, be staying with us #shameless), Brisbane Holiday Village has its very own convenience store that’s chock full of essential toiletries and food!

Fuel in the Tank?

There’s nothing worse than a getaway car that breaks down before your house leaves your review mirror..

That’s not to say ‘get a full service done’ before you leave.

Simply stop at a servo on the way, fill the tank, check your oil, water and coolant levels and make sure that your ride has the best chance of leaving your worries in the dust!

Think of the money you’ll save if you take 3 minutes to fill the coolant up or top up the water. Better spending 3 minutes and $6 on coolant, than a 4 hour walk, a new radiator hose and getting heatstroke whilst waiting for a truck to tow your car!
