There’s NO place like Brisbane! – A Local Holiday Guide

Think Local – It’s not just tourists who holiday here!

We say that home is where the heart is – but what if the heart has caught the travel bug? Our local city of Brisbane is a fantastic holiday destination for singles, couples, families and everyone in between – so who said only tourists get to have all the fun?

As the ever-adorable meerkat Aleksander and his faithful sidekick Sergei (who definitely needs a holiday) say: it’s SIMPLES! Our humble, local city of Brisbane is a fantastic holiday destination for singles, couples, families and everyone in between – so who said only tourists get to have all the fun?

There are lots of ways you can go on holidays and leave the daily grind behind you without spending an arm and a leg!

Get into Holiday Mode

Who has caught themselves dreaming about being somewhere other than at work, or at the dentist, or standing in line at the supermarket waiting for the person in front to return from running off to get ‘one-more-thing’ and coming back with three?

We all need a break (for our own health and sanity), and while there is no set formula for getting into ‘holiday mode’, there are things you can do to get yourself and your family in the spirit.

1.    Pick your holiday dates

Having a holiday to look forward to can really improve attitudes around the house, at work, while waiting for that customer to get back to the cash register, etc. It’s a state of mind: you’re going on a holiday!

So set the date!

Talk to your family (or whoever you’re bringing along for the adventure) about when the best time will be – whether it’s a simple weekend escape, a school holiday adventure, or one of those ‘whole summer adventures’.

2.    Book your accommodation

Not every holiday needs to be in a fancy hotel, looking over a riviera and drinking champagne. We’re looking local! And while we have options (so many options!) we also have the advantage!

As a Brisbanite, you’ll know some of the streets, motorways, low and peak traffic times, best restaurants, local attractions – all that jazz. You have probably even driven past a hotel, caravan parks, camping ground or holiday village on your way to work in the morning. Start thinking about what kind of accommodation experience you would like: hotel room, resort cabin, caravan, tent. Look around and book for what suits your needs the best.

3.    Design an Itinerary

So you know your way around Brisbane: the streets, motorways etc, BUT do you know EVERYTHING everything?

This is your chance to get acquainted with Brisbane (and surrounding areas like the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast). Brisbane is in proximity to countless fun activities, theme parks, year-round cultural events, festivals, plays and fetes!

TRY something that you’ve never done before (indoor skydiving anyone?)

DO all the touristy things and pretend you’re from an exotic land (theme parks or the Brisbane Story Bridge Climb)

SEE Brisbane through new eyes

LEARN about our wonderful city

DISCOVER what makes Brisbane so special

4.    SIMPLES (told you so)

Brisbane holds a treasure trove of places to stay; things to do, see and eat; and offers activities for everyone: from those seeking relaxation and serenity to the adventurous and adrenalin-crazy!

So get out there and explore Brisbane!

Your Guide to Brisbane on a Budget

What can you do in Brisbane without breaking the bank? Well, you’re in luck. In Brisbane, the best kind of fun is often found outdoors and it’s often free. From beautiful tropical gardens to vibrant markets, Brisbane has you (and your wallet) covered. Here are our top things to do in Brisbane on a budget.

Explore Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens

Pack a (homemade) picnic and head to Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens. A lush experience, the subtropical botanic gardens lay along the city’s inland. There are also free guided walks and exhibitions for both kids and adults. See here for more parks and outdoor activities near Brisbane Holiday Village.

Cycle the New Farm Riverwalk

The New Farm Riverwalk sits on the river across from the eastern side of Kangaroo Point. Overlooking the most scenic part of Brisbane River and Stony Bridge, the route meanders its way from the Story Bridge to New Farm Park. And if you don’t fancy cycling, the walk is also happily separated into roadways for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Go Swimming at Streets Beach

Brisbane’s iconic man-made beach at South Bank boasts a lagoon pool surrounded by white sandy beaches and Palm trees. Free to use, Streets Beach is a great place for both adults and kids alike – kick back and relax with a book or watch your kids splash around. Qualified lifeguards patrol the area all year.

Explore the Vibrant Markets

The Davies Park (West End), Rocklea and Carseldine markets are always great spots to spend a morning wandering between stalls. Browse everything from flowers to pre-loved clothes, and then stop for a taste of the local food on offer.

Enjoy an Inexpensive Feast

There are tons of tasty cheap eats in Brisbane. Try The Triffid’s beer garden for free music and inexpensive meals or taste the $10 cheeseburgers from Miss Kays on George St. Looking for something a bit lighter? Beach Burrito Co do $3 tacos on Tuesdays or Roll’d Queens Plaza serves rice paper rolls for just $3.90 each.

Hit the Beaches and Surf

Sunshine Coast Beaches, just south of Noosa Heads, is a quieter spot where you can relax, the kids can play in the sand, or you can hit the surf (beware of the rip!). After the beach, visit the townships of Maleny, Woodford and Dayboro.

Take in the Local History

Take a free guided tour of Brisbane’s City Hall and learn about the art, architecture and history. Top tip: Book in or arrive early as it’s a popular spot and groups tend to fill up pretty quickly. Afterwards, head upstairs to the Museum of Brisbane for an extra dose of local history.

Top Tip: Use the CityHopper to travel around the city. It’s a free ferry that takes passengers from North Quay to Sydney Street every 30 minutes between 6am and midnight.
